The elements of art and principles of design are the basic building blocks of any piece of art or design. For each of the projects in this class, you will be asked to incorporate certain elements and principles into your work.

Here is a list of some of the elements and principles that we will be working with:

ELEMENTS OF ART:

SPACE

  1. Negative space

  2. Positive space

  3. Foreground, middle ground, background

  4. White space. (Doesn’t have to be literally white.)

TEXTURE

  1. Rough

  2. Fuzzy

  3. Gritty

  4. Smooth

LINE

  1. Horizontal lines

  2. Vertical lines

  3. Diagonal lines

  4. Curved or freeform lines

  5. Lines used in a pattern

  6. Non-solid (dashed, dotted, etc.)

COLOR

  1.   Monochromatic

  2.   Primary

  3.   Secondary

  4.   Complimentary

  5.   Bold use of color (bright color, many colors, etc.)

  6.   Pastels

  7.   Black and white only

  8.   Strong contrast in values other than strictly black and white (light and dark areas using tints of the same color or different light and dark colors)

SHAPE

  1.   Square graphic element

  2.   square text blocks

  3.   circle graphic element

  4.   triangle graphic element

  5.   circle, triangle, or freeform text blocks

SIZE

  1.   Small

  2.   Medium

  3.   Large

  4.   Extra large
