Graphic Design 1
Graphic Design 1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
•Learn how to use Photoshop’s image selection tools in order to manipulate images.
•Learn how to add and edit type in Photoshop.
•Learn how to edit the size, color and shape of images in Photoshop.
•Learn how to correctly set up a Photoshop document by using layers.
•Locate and identify examples of how color and texture are used in CD cover design.
•Analyze song lyrics to determine the message of the song.
•Learn how to create sketches for design projects.
•Create a CD cover that incorporates a specific color palette, visual texture and a successful combination of words and images.
PROCEDURE:
Assignment 1: Design Research
Search the internet to find examples of how graphic designers have incorporated color and texture into CD design. Find at least one example of each of the bulleted items listed below and assemble your images into a Keynote presentation. Be sure to label your images with the subcategory of color and texture that you found, as well as cite the url where your images are originally from.
Here are the art elements that you should find examples of:
Color
• Monochromatic
• Primary
• Secondary
• Complimentary
• Bold use of color (bright color, many colors, etc.)
• Pastels
• Black and white only
• Strong contrast in values other than strictly black and white (light and dark areas using tints of the same color or different light and dark colors)
Texture
• Rough
• Fuzzy
• Gritty
•Smooth

Step 2: Inspiration
Begin by finding the lyrics to your favorite song. It should be a song that has personal meaning, yet also be appropriate for school. Double check for inappropriate language and themes/content that is not conducive for a school setting.
Once you have the perfect song, dissect it using the following handout: CD design handout.pages.
Step 3: Sketching
Now it’s time to be creative! Complete 3 detailed colored thumbnail sketches of your CD layout ideas in your sketchbooks. Each sketch should have a front and back cover, show the types of images you are planning on using, suggest a type treatment and indicate a color palette. Your designs should be image dominant.
Feeling stuck for ideas? In addition to using some of the Elements and Principles of art, here are some ways to alter a design based upon some of the Synectic Trigger Mechanisms by Nicholas Roukes:
Subtract
THINK: What can be eliminated, reduced, or disposed of? How can you simplify, abstract, stylize, abbreviate, omit or remove elements of the original?
Repeat
THINK: How can you repeat a shape, color, form, image or idea to reiterate, echo, restate, duplicate or reference your subject in some way?
Combine
THINK: How can you connect, arrange, link, unify, mix, merge, rearrange? How can you combine ideas, materials, or techniques?
Add
THINK: What can you extend, expand, augment, supplement or magnify? What else can be added to your image, idea, object or material?
Superimpose
THINK: In what ways(s) can you overlap, cover, and overlay your subject/object to produce new images, ideas or meanings? How might you superimpose dissimilar images or ideas? How can you superimpose several views of the same object to create different moments in time?
Change Scale
THINK: How can you change the size, proportion, ratio or dimensions to reflect a new idea or meaning.
Fragment
THINK: How can you split, chop, divide, dissect, or otherwise disassemble to make your subject appear discontinuous?
Distort
THINK: How can you twist your subject out of its true shape, proportion or meaning? Can you make it longer, fatter, and narrower, melt it, burn it, crush it, spill something on it, crack it, tear it, or subject it to another ‘torture’?
Parody
THINK: How can you ridicule, mock, caricaturize, or make fun of your subject? How can you make zany, comic or ludicrous references?
Symbolize
THINK: What can you do to your subject/object to make it into a symbolic image? What can you do to make it a public symbol or a private metaphor?
Mythologize
THINK: How can you transform your subject/object into an iconic image, ie: Coca-cola bottle, Brillo pads….?
